The London Black Cab is an icon all around the world, but up until now you'd hardly call it state-of-the-art. The new TX isn't just the replacement to the diesel-powered TX4 but it's a product from a new company and a taxi designed for modern London. The London Taxi Company – rescued from bankruptcy in 2013 by Geely – can trace its roots back to1919. Now renamed LEVC – London Electric Vehicle Company – and solely owned by Geely, the TX is the first product from the firm. It ditches the old TX4's off-the-shelf diesel engine for a Volvo-sourced 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor making the new TX a plug-in electric, range-extender vehicle. Like the old TX4 it's a bespoke design but the TX uses many Volvo (also Geely owned) parts and technology to revolutionise life behind the wheel and in the back seats. Here Batch and Ginny put the new Black Cab to the test.
